The 12 x 12 Exhibition is open NOW

Yes, we had the opening night last night, and the quilts look great hanging in the exhibition space at the Hutt Arts Society in Myrtle St, Lower Hutt.

Congratulations to Lyn White who won Best in Show for her quilt called "Light Show at the Museum":

Who would have thought that the Pink category would draw the most entries!

There are 12 different categories which also include Flora and Fauna:

and Round the World

Thank you to Kirsten Duncan who was the judge.  Kirsten was part of the Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt challenge and some of her mini quilts are also on display.

Here's some more quilts in case you can't get along to the exhibition:

by Lesley Masters - Dad's Dairy

by Lynley Graham
by Sheryl Anicich - winner of Best use of Colour award

12 x 12 Exhibition

Are you ready? Have you made your mini quilts yet? Did you hand them in at the AGM on Saturday?

Don't panic - you still have four weeks to come up with some great mini quilts for our 12 x 12 Exhibition at the Hutt Arts Society.  Entries close on 24 June at 4pm.  You can read all the rules on this page here.

Get creative people! Think outside the square - how many ideas can you pack into an area 12' x 12"?

It's going to be a great exhibition so join in and be proud to see your work hanging in the exhibition.

April meeting - Jo Dixey

Jo Dixey is New Zealand's only professional embroiderer and she came to speak to our guild in April.  Jo trained at the Royal School of Needlework in the UK and these are some of the beautiful pieces she bought along to show us.

You can find Jo on Instagram as @dixeysoul and her blog is here.

The details were just amazing and her stitching is beautiful.

Jo is now a quilter too, but embroidery is still her first love and passion.  Everyone enjoyed getting a close up look at her work.

Wendy Welsh was the lucky winner of the block of the month!!  Fortunately she was wearing just the right top to match the blocks on the wall.

I can't wait to sew these together and make my first ever truly scrappy quilt

February 2017 meeting - Hazel Foot

Hazel Foot was our guest speaker at our February meeting.  She spoke about how her international travels have inspired her to make quilts.

Hazel made this quilt after a trip to India. The trellis pattern down the centre is based on patterns she saw in India.

However, Hazel usually prefers black as a background, and wasn't totally happy with this quilt, so made another version with a black background. Here they are side by side.

And some close ups of the black version.

Hazel lived in Papua New Guinea for some years and made this quilt in the style of tapa cloth.

Another beautiful quilt Hazel showed included these gorgeous strong colours and very detailed quilting.

Hazel also ran a class on Sunday for our guild members.

January 2017 meeting

Our first meeting back was a relaxed affair with lots of hand stitching and catching up.  We had a great block of the month:

And got to see a finished quilt made from previous BOMs:

More from Show and Tell:

Our guest speaker in February will be Hazel Foot.
